Red Sox: Abreu, Rafaela Make Sporting News All-Star Team

The Boston Red Sox placed two outfielders on the Sporting News All-Star Team on Thursday, October 22, as Wilyer Abreu and Ceddanne Rafaela were both named to The Sporting News American League All-Star Team. The Red Sox announced the honor themselves, congratulating both players before the World Series between the Tampa Bay Rays and the Milwaukee Brewers. Abreu and Rafaela tied for the fourth outfield selection on the team.

The Red Sox announced the honor before the World Series began

Per Heavy, the Boston Red Sox shared the news on social media, writing: "Congrats to Ceddanne & Wilyer on being named to The Sporting News AL All-Star team!" The Sporting News awards are not the official Baseball Writers' Association of America awards, but per Baseball Now they are still highly regarded across the game. For a Boston team swept 2-0 by the New York Yankees in the American League Wild Card Series at Yankee Stadium, the honor is a reminder that the 2026 season still produced two genuine stars in the Fenway Park outfield.

Ceddanne Rafaela turned a career year into an All-Star season in center field

Ceddanne Rafaela represented the Boston Red Sox in the 2026 All-Star Game, and Ceddanne Rafaela finished the season with a career-high .283/.319/.442 slash line, 16 home runs, 70 RBI and 17 stolen bases. His 5.7 bWAR was also a career high. Rafaela played only center field this season after moving around the infield earlier in his career, and he recorded +21 Defensive Runs Saved and +16 Outs Above Average over 1,174 1/3 innings there. Rafaela is also a finalist to win a second consecutive Gold Glove Award.

Wilyer Abreu earned his place by hitting left-handers and leading the league in doubles

Wilyer Abreu was not an All-Star Game selection this summer, but Wilyer Abreu may have been Boston's most complete outfielder by the end of the season. Abreu posted 5.9 bWAR with a .248/.327/.446 slash line, a career-high 24 home runs and 76 RBI in 157 games. Trusted against left-handed pitching this year, Abreu took 264 more plate appearances than last season, led the American League in doubles, and posted +28 Defensive Runs Saved in 1,357 innings in right field. Like Rafaela, Abreu is a Gold Glove finalist.

Boston's young outfield gives the Red Sox a foundation for 2027

The Sporting News honor underlines why Boston's outfield is the least of the club's winter worries. With Rafaela anchoring center field and Abreu in right field, the Red Sox have two prime-age, two-way outfielders under team control, and Baseball Now noted that a healthy Roman Anthony might have given Boston a third Sporting News selection. The next test for both players is turning individual honors into a deeper October run in 2027.

Kyle Monangai Ruled Out: Patriots Catch Break vs Bears

Image
The New England Patriots will face the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field on Thursday night with Kyle Monangai ruled out for a third straight game, as the Bears running back continues to recover from thumb and toe injuries. Monangai was a non-participant on all three of Chicago's injury reports during the short week, and his absence leaves D'Andre Swift and Roschon Johnson to lead the league's top rushing attack against a Patriots defense that has held five of its six opponents under 100 rushing yards this season. Both the Patriots and the Bears enter the Week 7 game at 4-2. Why does losing Monangai hurt the Bears rushing attack without Monangai? The Chicago Bears are the only NFL team with two running backs over 300 rushing yards this season, and that balance is what made their ground game so hard to stop. Kyle Monangai has 324 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 60 carries in just four games, while D'Andre Swift leads Chicago with 398 rushing yards. Monangai ave...

Red Sox Reassign Epperson, Cabrera in Coaching Shuffle

Image
The Boston Red Sox reshaped their coaching staff on Wednesday, October 21, reassigning third base coach Chad Epperson and first base coach Pablo Cabrera to minor league roles for 2027. Epperson will manage the Triple-A Worcester Red Sox , while Cabrera will return to his previous job as the organization's minor league defensive coordinator, per reports. Why are the Red Sox changing their base coaches again? The red sox coaching staff changes 2026 are the first moves of the offseason for manager Chad Tracy , who had the interim tag removed in September after leading Boston to the postseason. Both Epperson and Cabrera were interim fixes themselves. Epperson was managing Double-A Portland when Boston fired Alex Cora in April, and he stepped in as third base coach after Kyle Hudson was let go. Cabrera took over at first base during the same April shakeup. Epperson drew the most scrutiny in the role. During one stretch in May, four Boston baserunners were thrown out at home plate ...
