Celtics Rebounding Problems Exposed in Pistons Collapse

The Boston Celtics lost their season opener 121-113 to the Detroit Pistons on Tuesday in Detroit after building a 22-point lead, and the celtics rebounding problems were as costly as any cold shooting night. Detroit outrebounded Boston 49-39 and piled up second-chance points while erasing the lead with a 23-0 run. Boston now returns home 0-1 to face the New York Knicks on Friday at TD Garden.

Detroit beat Boston 49-39 on the glass in the 121-113 collapse

Per NESN, Detroit finished with a 24-16 advantage in second-chance points, and those extra possessions kept feeding the Pistons comeback long after Boston's offense cooled. Jayson Tatum scored 13 points on 6-of-23 shooting and added 11 assists, while Paul George scored 38 points with five rebounds and five steals in his Celtics debut.

Tatum pointed to the same problem after the game. Per Celtics Wire, Tatum said the collapse started on defense, adding that Boston gave up offensive rebounds, Detroit scored off them, and the fouls that followed slowed the game down. Boston also gave up 32 free throw attempts, 14 of them in the fourth quarter.

Mitchell Robinson and Neemias Queta combined for only seven rebounds

Mitchell Robinson and Neemias Queta were supposed to give the Boston Celtics a physical presence around the basket this season. Against the Detroit Pistons, the two Boston centers combined for just seven rebounds in their first regular-season game together.

Detroit forward Ausar Thompson collected 11 rebounds by himself, more than Robinson and Queta together. Thompson also helped guard Tatum in the Pistons win. When one opposing forward outrebounds both of Boston's centers, defensive stops stop mattering, because the possession never really ends.

Karl-Anthony Towns and the Knicks will test Boston's glass work on Friday

The Boston Celtics do not get a soft landing. The defending champion New York Knicks visit TD Garden on Friday, October 23, at 7 p.m. ET for Boston's home opener, and New York center Karl-Anthony Towns recorded 19 points and 12 rebounds in Tuesday's loss to Philadelphia.

If Robinson and Queta cannot hold their ground against Towns, Boston's wings will have to crash the glass and help finish defensive possessions. One game does not make a season-long weakness, and new frontcourt combinations need time together. But Friday will show quickly whether Tuesday in Detroit was an opening-night blip or a real problem.
