Patriots: Carlton Davis Ruled Out vs Bears on Thursday Night

The New England Patriots will face the Chicago Bears on Thursday night without starting cornerback Carlton Davis III. Head coach Mike Vrabel ruled Davis out with a neck injury on Wednesday, October 21, even though Davis had returned to practice this week, leaving Christian Gonzalez to lead the Patriots secondary against Caleb Williams at Soldier Field.

Why was Carlton Davis ruled out vs Bears after returning to practice?

Carlton Davis III was limited in practice on Tuesday after missing the Patriots' previous two games with the neck injury, according to the official report on Patriots.com. Davis practiced again on Wednesday, which raised hopes that New England would finally have both starting outside cornerbacks available together.

Heavy reported that Mike Vrabel ruled out five players on Wednesday, per team reporter Evan Lazar. Along with Carlton Davis III, the Patriots ruled out guard Alijah Vera-Tucker with a hamstring injury, center Ben Brown with a knee injury, and cornerbacks Karon Prunty and Channing Canada, both with hamstring injuries.

Christian Gonzalez must carry the Patriots secondary against Caleb Williams

Christian Gonzalez returned in Sunday's 26-19 win over the New York Jets after missing two games with a shoulder injury, and the Patriots need him again on Thursday night. Without Carlton Davis III, Karon Prunty, and Channing Canada, New England's cornerback depth is thin against a Chicago Bears offense led by Caleb Williams.

Williams earned NFC Offensive Player of the Week honors on Wednesday after completing 30 of 36 passes for 305 yards and a touchdown in Chicago's 31-23 win over the Atlanta Falcons. Heavy noted that Williams completed 83.3 percent of his passes in that game, a Bears franchise record for a quarterback attempting at least 30 passes.

The Patriots offensive line is also short-handed at Soldier Field

The injury list is not only about the secondary for the New England Patriots. Alijah Vera-Tucker and Ben Brown are both out, so the Patriots offensive line protecting Drake Maye will again rely on replacements, including Walter Rouse, who stepped in against the Jets.

Patriots.com noted in its game plan that New England has placed 11 players on in-season injured reserve, with wide receiver Romeo Doubs the latest addition. On a short week, Mike Vrabel said the Patriots would have to figure out who is available and find 48 players to put out there on Thursday night.

What is next for the Patriots and the Chicago Bears?

The New England Patriots, 4-2 after three straight wins, visit the Chicago Bears, also 4-2, at Soldier Field on Thursday, October 22, with kickoff at 8:15 p.m. ET. A win would move the winner to 5-2, while the Patriots must do it without five ruled-out players and on a short week on the road.

For Carlton Davis III, the next question is whether the neck injury allows a return next week. Davis has 16 tackles in three appearances this season, and the Patriots have waited to put their expensive cornerback tandem of Davis and Christian Gonzalez back on the field together.
