Patriots: Henderson, Campbell Active vs Jets in Surprise Boost
Patriots: Henderson, Campbell Active vs Jets in Surprise Boost
The New England Patriots got better news than expected before kickoff on Sunday. Running back TreVeyon Henderson and left tackle Will Campbell are both active for the Week 6 game against the New York Jets at Gillette Stadium, along with wide receiver A.J. Brown and cornerback Christian Gonzalez. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. ET.
The decision answers the biggest Patriots Jets inactives Week 6 question of the morning. Henderson had been expected to miss multiple weeks, and Campbell was also feared out, yet both will dress for the AFC East matchup between the 3-2 Patriots and the 2-3 Jets.
A Surprise Turn on Henderson and Campbell
Henderson left last week's 45-17 win over the Las Vegas Raiders in the first half with a right ankle injury. Reports this week, per ESPN, said an MRI showed a high ankle sprain, that he would not need surgery, and that he was expected to be sidelined for multiple weeks. He has 163 rushing yards and one touchdown on 42 carries in four games this season.
Instead, the latest TreVeyon Henderson injury update took a different turn on Sunday morning. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported Henderson was expected to play against the Jets, per reports, and the official inactive list confirmed it. Henderson practiced on a limited basis during the week and told reporters Friday he was surprised he could practice and was feeling pretty good, per reports.
Campbell followed a similar path. The left tackle hurt his right knee on the same drive against Las Vegas, practiced in a limited capacity all week, and was listed as questionable. He is active and will not miss a game, giving Drake Maye his starting blind-side protector against a Jets defense that recorded eight sacks last week against Cleveland.
Who Is Out for New England
New England's secondary remains short-handed. Cornerbacks Carlton Davis III, out with a neck injury, and Karon Prunty, out with a hamstring injury, will miss a second straight game. Fellow cornerback Channing Canada, also with a hamstring issue, is inactive for a second straight Sunday as well.
The rest of the Patriots inactives are healthy scratches or depth decisions: emergency third quarterback Behren Morton, offensive tackle Dametrious Crownover, and tight end Tanner Arkin.
That leaves Gonzalez, back from a shoulder issue, to lead the cornerback group, with Marcus Jones and Charles Woods also dressing after appearing on the final injury report. Woods left the Raiders game and did not return, but he is back this week.
Brown's Home Debut and What It Means for Maye
Brown's return may be the biggest boost for the offense. Hurt in the season opener at Seattle, Brown has not played since and was activated from injured reserve this weekend. Sunday marks his home debut after his offseason trade from the Eagles.
He joins an offense that has clicked the last two weeks under Maye. Maye accounted for 374 passing yards and five total touchdowns against the Raiders, and DeMario Douglas had the first two-touchdown game of his career in that win. With Henderson active alongside Rhamondre Stevenson and Corey Kiner, New England keeps its full backfield rotation instead of elevating a practice squad replacement.
For fans wondering how to watch Patriots vs Jets today, the game is on CBS at 1 p.m. ET from Foxborough, with sunny weather and temperatures in the mid-50s forecast.
Jets Also Missing Key Starters
New York will be without several starters of its own. Running back Breece Hall, out with a quad injury, wide receiver Adonai Mitchell, out with a finger injury, and guard Dylan Parham, out with a knee injury, were all ruled out Friday and did not make the trip. Edge rusher Joseph Ossai, defensive tackle Jack Heflin, and cornerback Nahshon Wright are also inactive for the Jets.
Braelon Allen starts in place of Hall after scoring the go-ahead touchdown last week against the Browns. The Jets did get one return: first-round rookie wide receiver Omar Cooper Jr. was activated from injured reserve after an ankle injury in Week 1 and is available to play.
New England has won two straight after beating Buffalo and Las Vegas, and a third straight win would keep the Patriots firmly in the AFC East race. Getting Henderson, Campbell, Brown, and Gonzalez all on the field at once makes that task a lot more realistic than it looked on Tuesday.
